PUTRAJAYA The by-election for the Port Dickson parliamentary seat will be held on Oct 13.

The Election Commission (EC) also announced that nomination day would fall on Saturday, Sept 29, The Star reported.

The announcement was made by EC deputy chairman Othman Mahmood yesterday.

The parliamentary seat in Negeri Sembilan was vacated by MP Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah of PKR after he resigned on Sept 12 to make way for Mr Anwar Ibrahim's return to Parliament.

Mr Othman said the by-election's estimated cost would be RM3.6 million (S$1.2 million).

He said this is higher than previous by-elections because Port Dickson is a bigger constituency with five state assembly seats under it, the New Straits Times reported.

"But the RM 3.6 million is just a ceiling estimation, the cost could be less," Mr Othman said at a press conference after chairing a special meeting on the by-election.

He said the campaign period will be 14 days from the nomination, till 11.59pm on Oct 12.

When asked why the campaign period is only 14 days, Mr Othman said: "The minimum campaigning period is 11 days, therefore we can choose whether it is 11 days, 14 days or 21 days.

"In this case, we deliberated with various parties and agreed that 14 days is suitable."

The Port Dickson by-election will involve 75,770 registered voters comprising 68,486 normal voters, 7,268 early voters, and 16 absent voters, the New Straits Times reported.
